Voting in the 32nd

FROM THE DESK OF DAVID POISSON

I've put together this page, to bring you the most important voting information for Loudoun County residents.

Voting is a cherished right of all Americans. I hope to see you at the polls each and every Election Day!

      David Poisson

In order to vote you must be registered.

If you are already registered to vote in Virginia

If you voted in Virginia in the last election, and have not moved or changed your name, then you are automatically registered -- congratulations!

If you are unsure whether you're registered

After successfully registering, all voters are mailed a voter registration card. If you have misplaced your card, or aren't sure of your registration status, call the Loudoun County voter registration office in Leesburg, at 703.777.0380, Monday - Friday, 8:30-5:00.

You can also verify online if you have a PIN number from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

If you have moved or changed your name since the last election

If you have moved out of your voting precinct, or if you have changed your name, you need to re-register. Follow the instructions immediately below for registration.

Note: There are 51 precincts within Loudoun County alone, so it is likely that if you have moved, even within Loudoun, you will be in a different precinct.

If you move and do not re-register, you may be allowed to vote in your new precinct for national and statewide races. However, you will not be allowed to vote for local races such as state representative or school board.

If you need to register (or re-register) to vote

To register to vote in Virginia, you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Virginia, and 18 or older by Election Day. You will need to fill out a Voter Registration Application Form.

Get the registration form online

You can download a printable Voter Registration Application Form from the Virginia State Board of Elections website. Print out the form, fill it in, and send it via postal mail before the deadline.

Pick up forms, or register in person

Voter registration application forms are available at various locations, including:

The application form can be prepared and submitted at most of the above sites.

If you prefer, pick up a form from one of the above sites. Fill it out later, and then mail it to the Loudoun County voter registration office.

Or, you can deliver the completed form in person to the Loudoun County voter registration office or to a DMV office.

What happens after registering

If your application is approved, a voter registration card will be mailed to you. If for some reason your application is not accepted, a denial letter will be mailed to you.

Where to vote on Election Day

Although absentee ballots are gaining in popularity, most people still prefer the all-American ritual of voting in person on Election Day. The polls will be open from 6:00 am until 7:00 pm on Election Day.

Look on your voter registration card, to find your voting district and local polling place. To find the exact address, you can use this list of Loudoun County districts and polling places.

If you don't have your voter registration card, go to this webpage run by the Virginia State Board of Elections. Enter your address and click the "Submit" button (top screen). A results page (bottom screen) will list your:

  • local polling place
  • Virginia House of Delegates district (hopefully the 32nd District, where David Poisson is running)
  • Virginia Senate district
  • U.S. House of Representatives congressional district
  • U.S. Senators

How to apply for an absentee ballot

If you cannot make it to the polls on Election Day, you can vote by mail. Just send in an Absentee Ballot Application form. Then, a few weeks before the election, you'll receive the official absentee ballot in the mail. Fill it in -- this is your vote -- and mail it back in the accompanying envelope.

Alternatively, you can cast an in-person absentee vote before Election Day, by going to the Loudoun County voter registration office.

The four sections below describe the absentee ballot requirements and procedures in more detail.

Who can obtain an absentee ballot?

You are eligible to receive an absentee ballot if 1) you are a registered voter and 2) you fit certain categories. The most common reasons to obtain an absentee ballot are:

  • If you will be away from Loudoun County due to personal business or vacation, or because you are a student
  • If your work day (including commuting) is longer than 11 hours on Election Day.
  • If you are on active duty military service
  • If you reside outside the the U.S.
  • If you cannot go to the polls due to physical disability or illness, or due to helping someone with a disability or illness
  • If you have a religious obligation

The absentee ballot form requires you to provide basic additional information about your selected reason. For example, you will have to provide the name of your employer, your place of travel, your type of disability or illness, etc.

Apply for an absentee ballot and vote later

If you are in one of the above categories, and you want to mail or fax in your absentee ballot, begin the process by filling out an Absentee Ballot Application form. The completed application can be mailed or can be delivered in person to the Loudoun County voter registration office. After it is processed, an official absentee ballot will be mailed to you.

Get the application online

You can download a printable Absentee Ballot Application form from the Virginia State Board of Elections website. Print out the form, fill it in, and mail it to the Loudoun County voter registration office as early as possible.

There are also other downloadable forms for special cases such as military personnel and overseas residents.

If you have questions, see the Absentee Ballot page of the Board of Elections website.

Get the application mailed or faxed to you

Contact the Loudoun County voter registration office. They can mail or fax you an Absentee Ballot Application. After you receive it, fill it in and mail it back to the office as early as possible.

Application deadline

The Loudoun County voter registration office must receive your Absentee Ballot Application form in a timely fashion, please be sure to have your ballot in by the deadline; however, you are strongly recommended to get your application in earlier. This gives time for you to receive the ballot in the mail.

Apply for an absentee ballot and vote in person

To cast an absentee ballot, it may be most convenient to simply visit the Loudoun County voter registration office in person. This is because you can fill out your Absentee Ballot Application, and then (assuming it is approved) actually cast your ballot during the same visit.
